Could Facebook Be Driving Visitors Away From Your Website?
Everybody seems to want social media icons on their websites, but those little icons could be doing more harm than good.
Social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn are useful tools, but they’re not your property. Your social media accounts are subject to the platform’s terms of service. Your post (or account) can be deleted or edited or hidden at any time, for any reason.
Use social media to drive traffic to your own hosted website. That’s the only online content you truly own and control.
- Place social media icons in the footer of your website or at the end of each blog post to prevent readers from clicking away before they have a chance to consume your content.
- Use social media to announce a new blog post. Make sure you provide a clickable link to bring visitors to your site to read the new post.
- If it’s worth posting on Facebook, it’s probably worth a blog post.
- Set a “Featured Image” images in every WordPress blog post to ensure your social media teasers are eye-catching.
Social media is a promotional tool, not a primary place for your content to live. Make sure you’re not unwittingly driving traffic from your site to social media.
